I have never talked to anyone. I am used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?
Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the ability to reach out. At some point everyone needs help. Perhaps this problem feels overwhelming and is making it difficult to access your past strengths. In our work together I will help you identify what those strengths are and how to implement them again in what is happening now.
What is the difference between talking to you and friends or family?
A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. I am trained and certified to help you deal with whatever emotional problems you have and am unbiased whereas friends and family are incapable of being so. You will not have to worry about others “knowing my business,” as therapy is completely confidential.
Why can I not just take medication?
Medication just treats the physical symptoms. Our work together is designed to explore the root of the issue, dig deep into your behavior and teach you coping mechanisms that will help you accomplish your personal goals.
Medication can be effective and is sometimes needed in conjunction with therapy. If additional support is needed, I work closely with psychiatrists in the area to help you find the best fit for your needs.
How does therapy work? What will happen in my sessions?
Because each person has different issues and goals the therapy will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs.
How long will I need to attend therapy?
Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time needed to obtain your therapy goals can vary, but the choice is ultimately yours.
What do I need to do to get the most of out my sessions?
I am glad you are committed to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication is crucial to your success. It is the work you do outside of our sessions in tandem with what you will learn in your sessions that will really help you see your personal growth and development.
